Our top UK airfields for winter flying - or for aviation days out when the weather keeps you grounded.

Where to go in the winter?

Winter is coming and we all know what that means for us VFR pilots… Long days spent looking at the weather, hoping for improvements and itching to get back in the air. Therefore, we have reviewed these three airfields that are perfect to visit both by air and by car, making them ideal for those days where your aircraft is better off tucked up in a nice, warm hangar.

Old Warden (EGTH), Bedfordshire

Home to the Shuttleworth Collection, you’ll see some incredibly rare vintage aircraft, like the world’s oldest flying aeroplane, the Bleriot, built in 1909. Almost all of the aircraft in the hangars fly throughout the airshow season and if you’re lucky, you can catch a glimpse of one of the collection pilots practicing for displays or the engineers doing engine runs throughout the winter months. If you’re interested in getting to fly a vintage aircraft, the Cambridge Flying Group Tiger Moths operate from the airfield and offer trial lessons and experiences. If you’ve never been to Old Warden, this is definitely one to visit!

Runway: 02/20, 799m

Fuel: UL91 & 100LL

Landing Fee: £15

Cafe: Open every day 1000-1600L

Duxford Airfield (EGSU), Cambridgeshire

An iconic name in British aviation, Duxford pairs a busy GA-friendly airfield with the Imperial War Museum’s remarkable collection of both airworthy warbirds, retired airliners, such as the Concorde, and everything in between. Visiting pilots can enjoy excellent facilities, hard and grass runways, and spend a full day wandering the seven hangars. You will most likely see several warbirds flying throughout the day with both Classic Wings and the Aircraft Restoration Company’s Aerial Collective offering unique experiences in the shape of Tiger Moth, Spitfire and Hurricane rides.

Breighton Airfield (EGBR), East Yorkshire

A hidden gem in East Yorkshire, Breighton is the home of the Real Aeroplane Company and a haven for classic aircraft enthusiasts. Its well-kept grass strip and welcoming community make it a great fly-in destination when weather allows. Throughout the year you’ll often find unique vintage aircraft flying, with several one-of-a-kind aircraft being exercised, and the friendly Collection pilots and volunteers are always up for giving you a hangar tour.
